2006/08/06

On the morning of August 6, 2006, local time, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, who was on a visit to Papua New Guinea, held a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the reviewing of the conflict between Lebanon and Israel by the UN Security Council.

During the talks, Annan briefed on the latest developments in the reviewing of the Lebanon-Israel conflict by the UN Security Council. While expressing China's concern over the conflict that has lasted four weeks, Li urged the parties concerned to cease fire immediately and settle the issue through dialogue and negotiations. Li said the UN Security Council should take actions as soon as possible to prevent the conflict from further spread. He added China hopes that the United Nations will take effective measures to ensure the security of UN peacekeepers including those from China, noting that China has provided humanitarian aid to Lebanon and the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue has also departed for this region. China will continue to make unremitting efforts to help solve the conflict, the Chinese foreign minister said.
